Mesothelioma is a relatively rare type of cancer, which affects approximately one in a million people. The usual direct cause is exposure to asbestos (around 75% of cases), but there is also a genetic factor in the likelihood of anyone contracting the disease. Mesothelioma causes malignant cells to grow in the protective sac which covers most of the body’s internal organs, which is called the mesothelium.

There are various areas of the body in which Mesothelioma can occur… most commonly in the lining around the lungs (pleura), sometimes in the linings of the abdominal cavity (8% as likely as in the lungs) or heart areas. Mesothelioma acts by causing the cells of the mesothelium to divide and grow without control.

Although smoking does not directly cause Mesothelioma, a combination of smoking and asbestos exposure has been proven to increase the risk of Mesothelioma occurring in the lungs. Mesothelioma is usually caused by breathing in asbestos dust, such as at work, or even when washing the clothes of someone who has worked with asbestos. Due to its proven link with asbestos, there are legal proceedings involving compensation for Mesothelioma, and those working with asbestos are advised to shower and change clothes before leaving work, to reduce the chance of carrying asbestos dust outside the work place.

The symptoms of Mesothelioma can include breathing difficulties and coughing (due to fluid in the lungs), chest pain and less specific symptoms such as weight loss, fever and abdominal pain, can occur several decades after the asbestos exposure. Most patients die within 18 months of knowing they have Mesothelioma, not because the disease is rapidly progressing, but because diagnosis is often only clear at a late stage of the disease. Classifications of the stage (extent) of the Mesothelioma can be divided into “localized” when the cancer is only in the membrane surface, or “advanced” if it has spread to other parts of the body such as the lungs, chest wall, lymph nodes or organs in the abdomen.

Blue asbestos is more likely to cause Mesothelioma than white asbestos, due to the long thin fibers in blue asbestos; however, smaller particles of asbestos might be more dangerous than larger ones due to the fact that smaller particles can remain suspended in the air for longer periods. My dad is 45 years old and turns 46 on June 21. He has been smoking ever since he graduated from college, at age 25, turning 26. So he has been smoking for about 20 years. He quit for almost a year when we first moved to America, but he started again. So about 19 3/4 years he has been smoking. He has quit now, at age 45 and he hasn’t smoked for almost a month now. What is the chance of him still getting lung cancer?

Your lungs start to heal themselves within days of quitting smoking. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer but not the only cause. It can be hereditary, chemical pollutants and several other environmental factors. Give him a pat on the back for quitting it can only lower his risk.

Patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer have a number of treatment options available depending on the type and stage of the disease. Options include chemotherapy, radiation treatment and of course, surgical intervention. It is usual for patients to receive all three treatment regimes as part of their oncology therapy.

Surgery is indicated when in the early stages of the disease as the tumor is confined to a relatively small area and has not spread t other parts of the body. The removal of the tumor is known as a “resection” or you may hear the tumor as being “resectable”. In later stages of the disease, surgery is not usually as beneficial as chemotherapy or radiation treatment in tackling the disease, though “palliative surgery” may be advisable to provide relief for end-stage (Stage IV) lung cancer.

Surgery is not likely to be beneficial in treating the disease when it has spread to the lungs from another part of the body (referred to as “metastasized”), unless the cancer is non-aggressive and the tumor is not large.

Where surgery may be beneficial in curing the disease there are two types of surgical intervention which may take place:

Minimally invasive surgery; andTraditional open surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery

This involves the surgeon making two small incisions between the ribs. Each of the incisions are typically an inch or so, but this provides enough room for a skilled surgeon to operate without the need for rib spreading.

In the upper incision, a camera is inserted which relays a high-definition television picture which is used to guide the surgeon as they operate through the second lower incision. This type of surgery is also sometimes referred to as Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery or VATS.

VATS has several advantages for patients whose lung cancer is susceptible to treatment using this technique. There are fewer complications that can arise, while the recovery time and stay in hospital are significantly reduced and the patient experiences much less pain due to the ribs not being spread. Minimally invasive surgery allows patients with early stage lung cancer to return to enjoying a high quality standard of life. Where chemotherapy is required after the operation, the length of treatment is reduced and stands a greater chance of success because it may be initiated much sooner than the alternatives.

Typically, a patient is able to stand up and walk around within two hours of surgery and is usually released from hospital within a day or two.

Traditional Open Chest Surgery

Patients may not be a suitable candidate for minimally invasive surgery, usually associated with anatomical reasons or location of the tumor and stage of the disease. Traditional open surgery involves an incision in the patient’s side and the spreading of the ribs to provide the surgeon with access to the tumor.

Palliative Surgery

Palliative surgery is used to make a patient more comfortable during the end-stages of the disease when the condition has become incurable. For instance, the tumor may need to be removed because it is causing an obstruction of the airway.

When someone has been living for over 2 years with lung cancer, what does it mean when the patient starts coughing up blood? The doctor says there’s nothing they can do.

Just so you know, it’s not me that has cancer, but someone close to me. It is quite advanced, but somehow she keeps going on. Incredibly strong, and doesn’t seem to want to give up. She sometimes improves enough to be able to go for a short walk outside, but this isn’t often.

The person already has lung cancer, it would seem it is just another stage of the disease…………I would check out webmd.com………..to see if I could find out anything further, or simply speak to the Dr. in private about the situation……..

Information on Types and Treatment of Lung Cancer

Cancer is a disease in which certain body cells don’t function right, divide very fast, and produce too much tissue that forms a tumor. The lungs, a pair of sponge-like, cone-shaped organs, are part of the body’s respiratory system. When we breathe in, the lungs take in oxygen, which our cells need to live and carry out their normal functions. When we breathe out, the lungs get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of the body’s cells.

Lung cancers manifest with symptoms produced by the primary tumor, locoregional spread, metastatic disease, or ectopic hormone production. See Image 1 for a summary of all signs and symptoms. Approximately 7-10% of patients with lung cancer are asymptomatic and their cancers are diagnosed incidentally after a chest radiograph (CXR) performed for other reasons. The symptoms produced by the primary tumor depend on its location (ie, central, peripheral).

There are two main types of lung cancer, small cell and non small cell. Small cell is faster growing but chemo is quite successful with it… I know several people that are presently N.E.D. (no evidence of disease) that have small cell lung cancer. Its very rare to have surgery with small cell as its usually metastized by the time of diagnosis.

Every smoker is at risk for lung cancer. It is estimated that 87% of all cases of lung cancer are caused by cigarette smoking. The major risk factor for lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Your risk of getting lung cancer from cigarette smoking increases the longer you smoke, the more you smoke, and the deeper you inhale. Smoking low tar cigarettes does not prevent you from getting lung cancer. Importantly, if you quit smoking, your risk of getting lung cancer declines.

Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. The number of deaths per year from smoking exceeds the number of deaths per year from all accidents, suicides, drug use, homicides and AIDS combined. An estimated 45 million U.S. adults are smokers, and more than a third of all U.S. high school students smoke cigarettes.

Normal cells become cancer cells because the genes inside them are damaged.  In most cases of lung cancer, smoking causes this gene damage.  Cancer Research UK is investigating this gene damage.  We are researching why some smokers get cancer and some don’t.  If we know more about the genes that are damaged, it may help prevent the disease in the future.

Women with lung cancer now have more treatment choices and hope than ever before. Doctors keep finding ways to improve treatments for lung cancer and ways to help women with lung cancer have better lives. We are continually learning more about lung cancer, its prevention, detection, and treatment. This section of CancerSource will discuss all of these areas. As is true of many cancers, the treatment of lung cancer depends upon a variety of factors. The most important factors are the histopathologic (diseased tissue) type of tumor that is present and its stage.
