Question by cute: What are the sines of lung cancer I think I might have it?
I am a 42 year old female. I don’t smoke but have been exposed to second hand smoke all my life. Sometimes especially a lot lately I wheeze when I breath and have shallow breathing. There is no lung cancer in the family but there are other types of cancer in my family.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which affects the mesothelium. Pleural, peritoneal and pericardial are the three forms of mesothelioma. It is a serious form of cancer and occurs due to asbestos exposure for a prolonged period of time. Mesothelioma symptom appears after many years of being infected. Most of the mesothelioma deaths occur since the infection is diagnosed at developed stages of the disease.

Similar symptoms are shown by all the three types of mesothelioma cancer and the exact diagnosis can be done only by an experienced medical practitioner. Many deaths have occurred due to the wrong diagnosis and delayed treatment due to it. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, building up of excess fluid between the pleura known as pleural effusion, coughing up of blood, pain in abdomen, chest, shoulder or arm, weight loss, loss of appetite, fever etc.

Depending of the seriousness of the disease, the symptoms may vary from person to person. About 90% of the patients experience chest pain and shortness of breath, 84% suffer pleural effusion and less than 30% bear weight loss. It should also be noted that around 3% of the patients remain without any symptoms.

Pain or swelling in the abdomen, high fever, problems associated with bowel movements, weight loss etc are experienced by peritoneal mesothelioma patients. A few patients may go through additional mesothelioma symptoms where as some may not witness all the above mentioned symptoms. The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are persistent cough, pain of varying degrees, tiredness without any physical exertion etc.

Once the disease is properly identified through the tests and symptoms the first thing to do is to decide up on a winning treatment formula. Mesothelioma symptom normally appears when one has crossed his prime age. This is a serious handicap in the way for a complete cure. Once the treatment is finalized, the actual process starts in earnest. Localized tumors can be eradicated by surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation may be required if the cancer is in the advanced stages, but the results are not always positive.

I think you would be hard pushed to find a single smoker anywhere that wasn’t aware of the dangers of smoking. Even if you wanted to get away from it you couldn’t because the media won’t let you. If you haven’t taken any notice of these messages it’s because you want to ignore them. Lung cancer is not pleasant but is not the exclusive realm of the over 65’s and people prone to it because of genetics.

Most people think that just one cigarette won’t hurt them but they obviously are unaware that one cigarette won’t leave your lungs completely for a month. So you can imagine how much damage just one pack of cigarette can do. So, if you still haven’t made your mind up you really need to start doing some research and the internet is full of articles on lung cancer.

There is no excuse not to keep informed nowadays especially with all the resources there are to help you. Prevention is always better than cure and no-one can say that they weren’t given enough information nowadays to help stop a condition that is preventable. There are some medical conditions that once highlighted the individual will take appropriate action but this isn’t generally the case with smoking.

There are those that just need a bad scare to make them take some action and quit smoking. Often though by the time that the medical problem makes itself know, all the damage has been done and it’s too late. Knowing this, how stupid would you have to be to continue smoking, albeit through a slit in your throat, after having cancer of the same. I know some people find it harder to quit smoking than others but at what point would this person stop.

Question by Barbara: how long does it take to die from lung cancer?
My mother is 81 and has small tumors in both lungs. She has decided against a biopsy since she doesn’t want any cancer treatment anyway. She says she would rather not even know if she has cancer. How long would it take to die if lung cancer is left untreated.

There really isn’t a direct answer to his question. If she wont even go to the Doctor and have it checked out with a biopsy no one really knows if she even has cancer, or what stage it is. Some spots can be benign. some forms of cancers are slow growing other forms are fast growing, Talk to your mother and let her know how important it is to have it biopsied, it could be nothing and then again it could be something easily treated. If it does happen to be cancer she will want to know even if she does nothing about it, she will needs certain medication to help her along. It would be her to chose what way she would want to go, treatment or not! If she doesn’t want to find out she will live the rest of her life thinking she has cancer and in reality she could be cancer free. That would not be a way to live the last years of her life..
