Understanding Lung Cancer Survival Rate

Understanding Lung Cancer Survival Rate

Article by Micheal George

Lung cancer is a disease that starts from abnormal cell growth in the tissues of the lungs, that sometimes lead to metastasis, which is the spread from one part of organ to another. Its an illness that kills millions of people worldwide, and every day more and more people are diagnosed with lung cancer.

The most common cause of cancer in lungs is smoking. The carcinogens which is present in cigarettes are known to be the cause of damage in cells of the lungs that develop into cancer. However too much exposure to the chemicals like radon gas, asbestos and coal fumes, may also lead to a killer disease cancer.

The lung cancer survival rate is a percentage of cancer survivor in a specific amount of time. Usually statistics based it in records of a five year cancer survival rate. This refers to a percentage of people who survive cancer five years after its diagnosis. The estimated over all lung cancer survival rate is fifteen percent survival five years after diagnosis and five percent survival ten years after diagnosis. These records are based on the research that comes from information gathered from hundreds of lung cancer patient.

Lung cancer survival rate vary also in the stage of cancer . The estimated survival rates for stage 0 is 70 to 80 percent which is higher compare to stage 1 which is only 50 percent and much lower in stage 2 until stage 4 lung cancer. Survival rate depends also to the cancer type, symptoms, patients general health and whether the cancer has re-occurred.

Through cancer survival rate a doctor may understand the prognosis of the disease. The experience of the other patient in lung cancer may give an idea to a doctor the chance a cancer will be cured. Statistics of survival rate may also help doctors develop a treatment plan for its patient.

In general the number number of people diagnosed with cancer are growing every single day. Cancer in the lungs is a type of disease that hard to cure and treatments are so expensive. Oncologists are still studying for some other alternative treatment for this cancer. But the most effective way of not getting this disease is through prevention. Stay away from smoking and other harmful chemicals like asbestos and radon gas. If you feel that somethings not normal about your health, consult your doctor. Life has a lot to offer don’t let cancer ruin your life.

Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Article by Flack Law Office

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. In many cases it is directly correlated with occupational exposure to the toxic substance.

For a long time mesothelioma has been considered a mysterious and incurable disease. However, in the last twenty years, medical technology, scientists and researchers have come to learn more about the disease and its causes.

Fortunately, with more awareness about the disease, physicians have become more able to detect the cancer during the earlier stages so they can provide more forms of treatment.

This form of cancer occurs within the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of the body’s internal organs (mesothelium). In the medical world, there are two different types and they are based on what part of the mesothelium is affected. In the majority of cases, mesothelioma affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs. Other rarer forms affect the tissue in the abdomen, the heart and around the testicles.

Sadly, this is an aggressive and deadly form of cancer, where a cure is not usually achievable. There are treatments available, but in most cases the goal of the treatments is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.

The most common form (pleural mesothelioma) affects the tissue surrounding the lungs. It causes specific signs and symptoms including: chest pain under the rib cage, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, painful coughing, lumps of tissue underneath the skin on the chest, and weight loss. Unfortunately, fluid in the chest can compress on the lung, making breathing exceptionally difficult for the patient.

Cancer begins with a series of genetic mutations within a cell, which causes the cell to grow and multiply at an unchecked pace. Risk factors for developing mesothelioma are directly linked to asbestos exposure. Direct exposure to asbestos fibers at someone’s work, or in their home greatly increases the risk. Even living with someone who works with asbestos or washing a spouse’s clothes that has the fibers on them can lead to mesothelioma. In fact, it is suggested that people who work with asbestos should shower and change clothes before leaving work and heading home.

These dangers have been nationally recognized. If a person handles asbestos in an unsafe manner that endangers those around them, or if they cause an asbestos injury as a result of recklessness or negligence, then the victim may have legal grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit. If you lost a loved one to mesothelioma, you may have cause for a wrongful death lawsuit against the legally liable party. An experienced attorney will be absolutely critical in pursuing just compensation in this matter. Do not speak with an insurance company without first discussing your case with an attorney, because if you do, they will likely offer you a settlement that is far below the true value of your claim. Contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your case today!

Recent Research Suggests Chemotherapy Ineffective for Mesothelioma Victims

Recent Research Suggests Chemotherapy Ineffective for Mesothelioma Victims

Article by Peter Kent

Chemotherapy is often the number one form of treatment for many patients suffering from cancer. However, it was recently discovered that chemotherapy is essentially ineffective on certain types of mesothelioma, such as malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). The study was published in a UK medical journal.

The research, considered a setback for scientists seeking treatment for the condition, was conducted by Nicholas J. Vogelzang, MD, director of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas, and was released in May 2008.

Chemotherapy Ineffective Mesothelioma Treatment

The study found that chemotherapy not only did not offer any improvement among mesothelioma patients but was found to have no significant impact whatsoever on survival rate of victims.

According to the study, the median average of survival rate between victims who received an active symptom control (ASC) versus those who received the same treatment plus chemotherapy was less than a month apart, suggesting no beneficial impact, although, the study did suggest further investigation into treatments of ASC and chemotherapy were likely required.

What is Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma?

MPM has a poor prognosis, as stated in the 2007 issue of The Oncologist, with only a few months of life expectancy. Breathlessness and difficulty breathing are side effects of the cancer, which is considered an aggressive form of lung cancer.

The condition is also difficult to treat because of the high rate of misdiagnosis among patients. Within the next 10 to 20 years, the number of reported mesothelioma cases is expected to increase.

Mesothelioma Causes

For years, mesothelioma has been linked to the inhalation of vermiculite asbestos fibers and dust. Vermiculite is a mineral that was heavily mined. During the 20th century, several vermiculite mines, although the exact number is unknown, were functional in the United States, with countless other mines in operation throughout the world.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently in charge of regulating and issuing guidelines for the safe removal and cleanup of asbestos in homes and building throughout the country. However, there is a large number, although estimates are not clear, of structures with asbestos-ridden insulation currently in the United States and improper exposure to such could increase risk of developing a form of mesothelioma.

Additional Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment Options

While the unfortunate truth is that malignant pleural mesothelioma is usually fatal among victims, there are a few treatment options for managing the disease, however these often depend upon the symptoms and stage of the illness.

Surgery is the most common mesothelioma treatment, although a study released in July 2007 in The Oncologist emphasized that the role of surgery in managing MPM is debatable. However, the three main surgical techniques used to manage MPM are pleurodesis, pleurectomy/decorication (P/D) and extrapleural pnemonectomy (EPP).

The study noted that as of yet, there have been no controlled studies determining whether one surgical procedure is better than another. Of the surgical procedures, the P/D and EPP methods aim for local control of the disease and while P/D has a limited morbidity, EPP has between 1.5 to 5 percent mortality rates.

It is often recommended that individuals who suffer from this type of mesothelioma or any form of mesothelioma locate an experienced mesothelioma attorney. Because of the high costs and technical difficulties associated with mesothelioma treatment, a mesothelioma lawsuit may potentially offer relief in the form of monetary compensation, especially since mesothelioma is considered by some to have been highly preventable.

Endometrial Cancer treatment in india at affordable Cost

Endometrial Cancer treatment in india at affordable Cost

Article by Pankaj Nagpal

Uterine Cancer

Uterine (Endometrial) cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer (i.e., cancer that originates in female reproductive system). It develops in the body of the uterus, or womb, which is a hollow organ located in the lower abdomen. The wall of the uterus is comprised of an inner lining (called the endometrium) and an outer layer of muscle tissue (called the myometrium).

Endometrial cancer (Uterine Cancer) is most common after the reproductive years, between the ages of 60 and 70. Endometrial cancer is sometimes called uterine cancer, but there are other cells in the uterus that can become cancerous – such as muscle or myometrial cells.

Endometrial cancer (Uterine Cancer) is often detected at an early stage because it frequently produces vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods or after menopause. If discovered early, this slow-growing cancer is likely to be confined to the uterus. Removing the uterus surgically often eliminates all of the cancer. In fact, stage I Endometrial cancer is successfully treated more than 90 percent of the time.

Causes of Endometrial Cancer (Uterine cancer)

Endometrial Cancer (Uterine cancer) seems linked to several predisposing factors : –

* abnormal uterine bleeding. * diabetes. * familial tendency. * history of uterine polyps or Endometrial hyperplasia. * hypertension. * low fertility index and anovulation. * nulliparity. * obesity. * Uninterrupted estrogen stimulation.

In most cases, uterine cancer is an adenocarcinoma that metastasizes late, usually from the endometrium to the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other peritoneal structures. It may spread to distant organs, such as the lungs and the brain, through the blood or the lymphatic system

Uterine cancer usually affects postmenopausal women between ages 50 and 60;^ Back to Top

Diagnosis of Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer)

1. The doctor performs a pelvic exam, checking the vagina, uterus, ovaries, bladder, and rectum for Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer). The doctor feels these organs for any lumps or changes in their shape or size. An instrument called a speculum is used to widen the vagina so the doctor can see the upper portion of the vagina and the cervix. 2. The Pap test is often performed during a pelvic exam Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer). The doctor uses a wooden scraper (spatula) or small brush to collect a sample of cells from the cervix and upper vagina. The cells are then sent to a medical laboratory to be checked for abnormal changes. Because uterine cancer begins inside the uterus, it may not show up on a Pap test, which examines cells from the cervix. 3. A biopsy is necessary to help the doctor make a diagnosis. A biopsy can usually be done in the doctor’s place. In a biopsy, the doctor removes a sample of tissue from the uterine lining. In some cases, a woman may require a dilation and curettage (D&C), which is usually same-day surgery done in a hospital with anesthesia. During a D&C, the opening of the cervix is widened and the doctor scrapes tissue from the lining of the uterus. A pathologist examines the tissue to check for cancer cells, hyperplasia, or other conditions. After a D&C, women may have cramps and vaginal bleeding during healing.

Common Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer) Symptoms

Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer)symptoms are often what prompt women to seek medical attention. Most of the time, the disease remains silent until it has spread to nearby tissues and organs.

1. abnormal bleeding- heavy bleeding between periods, or heavy bleeding during irregular periods. 2. pain during sexual intercourse. 3. pelvic pain or pain in the legs or back. 4. difficulty urinating or pain during urination. 5. enlarged uterus found upon medical exam. 6. vaginal discharge that can be thick or watery; pink or brown; and foul smelling. 7. unexpected weight loss.

Medical Treatment of Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer)

Surgical Treatment of Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer)in India : – Surgery is the best option when Endometrial Cancer (Uterine Cancer) is diagnosed in its very early stages. At this time, the location and the stage of cancer make removal easy. Sometimes patients are treated with a combination of surgery and radiation therapy. There are several surgical procedures that can be used and the choice of which procedure is used depends on the type and stage of the cancer.

Hysterectomy in India : – Almost all women with Endometrial cancer (except those with advanced or stage IV) are treated with a hysterectomy. They may also receive additional treatment. A simple hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus, making the woman unable to have children. In a procedure known as bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, both ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the uterus are removed. This may be necessary because Endometrial cancer often spreads to the ovaries first.

Radiation therapy in India : – Sometimes radioactive pellets are placed inside the body near the tumor. This is called brachytherapy or internal radiation therapy. Fatigue, upset stomach, diarrhea and nausea are also common complaints of women having radiation therapy. Read More.

Chemotherapy in India : – uses anticancer drugs to kill the cancer cells. The drugs are given orally or intravenously. They enter the bloodstream and can travel to all parts of the body to kill cancer cells. Generally, a combination of drugs is given since it is more effective than a single drug in treating cancer. Side effects of this treatment include stomach upset, vomiting, appetite loss, hair loss, mouth or vaginal sores, fatigue, menstrual cycle changes and premature menopause. Read More.

Hormonal therapy : -uses drugs like progesterone that will slow the growth of Endometrial cells. These drugs are usually available as pills. This therapy is usually reserved for women with advanced or recurrent disease.

Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Article by Ryan Murphy

Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body’s internal organs.” The disease then proceeds to affect the abdomen wall or in this case, the peritoneum. It then goes on to infect a serious of membranes in the region as well as the membranes that enclose several other major organs. Mesothelioma is most oftenly found in people who have in some way inhaled asbestos particles or other airborn particles at their job or place of residence. Although, there is no connection between mesothelioma and smoking, which is a major factor in lung cancer. While smoking has not been proven to cause mesothelioma, it has been found to increase the risk of other asbestos-induce cancer. Of the 2.6 million annually diagnosed cases of mesolthelioma, 15% to 20% are peritoneal mesothelioma.

Cause and Effect “Malignant Peritoneal” Mesothelioma:

The only known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma is an extensive exposure to asbestos particles. Abstestos particles are microscopic natural fibers that are most oftenly found in highly industrialised areas. The particles become harmful once they enter the body and make their way to the abdominal wall, which they can reach through two methods. They can be ingested and then processed through digested and then lodged in the peritoneum, hence the name “Peritoneal Mesothelioma”. On the other hand, the harmful fibers can be inhaled and then make their way into the lungs and consequently the lymph nodes. Then, as most cancerous cells do, the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and begin to divide erratically and without control. Then the cancerous cells begin to invade and compromise the nearby tissues and organs. This type of cancer can very easily metastasize (spread) from its origin, usually the peritoneum, to other parts of the body. Thus it becomes a very deadly and unpredictable disease.
