New Therapy Treats Lung Cancer

New Therapy Treats Lung Cancer

Article by Peter Kent

A recent news article reported the results of an international clinical trial, now in Phase III, which offers a successful oral prescription medication as a treatment to lung cancer. According to scientists, the treatment is just as successful at treating lung tumors as chemotherapy treatments.

The trial was developed and studied by scientists at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and studied approximately 1,466 patients suffering from lung cancer in 24 various countries worldwide. Lung cancer patients received randomized treatments of both a once-daily tablet known as Iressa and a chemotherapy drug known as docetaxel.

Those receiving chemotherapy had a combined median survival rate of 8 months with 34 percent having a one-year survival rate. Similarly, patients given the Iressa treatment had an overall survival rate of 7.6 months with a 32 percent survival rate of one year.

However, while Iressa appears to be on par with the chemotherapy treatment, scientists found that lung cancer patients who suffered from tumors with EGFR gene mutations and who were given Iressa had “an improved response rate and progression-free survival compared to docetaxel,” according to researchers of the study who spoke with Science Daily.

Iressa is a considered a “biological oral therapy” and, according to the researchers from the news article, “this is the largest study in lung cancer comparing an oral biologic to chemotherapy, and shows, for the first time that an oral biologic therapy is just as effective as chemotherapy.”

Lung Cancer Causes and Prevention

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is considered a leading cause of death in the United States. Science Daily reported that “in 2008, approximately 215,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer and approximately 114,000 people will die from the disease.” The Mayo Clinic also stated that “smoking causes the majority of lung cancers — both in smokers and in people exposed to secondhand smoke.”

Because the condition is considered preventable through smoking cessation therapies, the Surgeon General has outlined several steps that may assist a smoker in quitting the often addictive habit.

* Set a date to quite within two weeks.

* Remove all tobacco products from work and home environments.

* Alert friends, family, coworkers of your decision and request support.

* Looking at what has and hasn’t worked in the past and changing those in a most recent attempt may find success in quitting.

* Developing a list of “pro” reasons for quitting may be helpful.

* Try to determine challenges in advance and determine strategies to overcome these anticipated challenges.

In addition to this method, there are several varieties of nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), both prescription and non-prescription, that can assist a smoker in succeeding with quitting their tobacco addiction. The ACS reported the following as several smoking cessation aids:

* nicotine gum

* nicotine patches

* nicotine nasal spray

* nicotine inhalers

* nicotine lozenges

* high dose nicotine replacement therapy (Zyban, Chantix)

Smoking Cessation Prescription Drug Dangers

Unfortunately, not all smoking cessation prescription or non-prescription aids are ideal for an individual and some come with dangerous side effects. An example of one such smoking-cessation aid is that of Chantix, also known as varenicline tartrate. Chantix, from Pfizer, was released in May 2006 and is currently consumed by nearly 3 million Americans hoping to quit their nicotine addictions.

In November 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began receiving hundreds of complaints associated with the consumption of Chantix. The drug was allegedly causing suicidal behaviors and tendencies among patients, 37 of which were successful in committing suicide. The FDA began investigating the Chantix risks, but did not recall the drug from the market.

Individuals who suffered from the severe Chantix side effects or who lost a loved one, family member to suicide because of the drug, should contact a pharmaceutical attorney who may be able to provide details as to how to develop a Chantix class action lawsuit that can result in the compensation of a monetary reward

What is Peritoneal Mesothelioma Cancer – Facts Explain

What is Peritoneal Mesothelioma Cancer – Facts Explain

Article by Aeroponica

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare type of mesothelioma which attacks the lining of abdomen also known as peritoneum. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a universally fatal disease affecting 20% to 30% of the mesothelioma cases. It’s was first described by Miller and Wynn in the year 1908. According to the statistics, in the past two decades, the incidence of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma cancer has increased.

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen also known as peritoneum. The location of malignant cell is human’s abdominal lining and because of that, MPM can sometimes known as abdominal mesothelioma. However, most common term used to describe this type of cancer is peritoneal mesothelioma.

The main cause of MPM in humans is asbestos. Asbestos typically is the one of most commonly roofing materials since it is not only cheaper but is easy to fix on a roof. Asbestos exposure contributed to almost 70 to 80 percent of mesothelioma lung cancer. Humans come into contact with asbestos when they swallow or inhale the fibers. Asbestos inhalation may increase risk to develop asbestos related diseases, most importantly mesothelioma.

Asbestos was completely banned in UK since it was recognized to be a serious health hazard, and it is now responsible for about 4000 deaths each year and many cases of serious disease. The people at increase risk of developing health asbestos related disease are those whose work brings them into direct contact with asbestos such as builders, heating engineers, roofers and demolition workers. In addition to mesothelioma, asbestos exposure will increase the risk of other health problems such as lung cancer, asbestosis (chronic lung ailment) and other type of cancer such as larynx and kidney cancer.

Symptoms of Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

It can takes such a long time for cancer to develop the symptoms and sometimes may take up to 30 years, between exposure to asbestos and the start of the disease. Most common symptoms of the disease are abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, abnormal weight loss, anemia, easy fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Abdominal pain and swelling result from fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. Other than that, people can easily get fever when the disease starts to shows its symptoms. Among the symptoms stated above, abdominal pain is the most common reported initial symptoms of MPM.

Unexplained night sweats and blood coagulation problems are less frequent symptoms occurring when the cancer develops. If the cancer cells spread to the other part of the body, the symptoms may lead to trouble swallowing or swelling of the neck and face.

Diagnosis of Abdominal Mesothelioma

It is very difficult to diagnose peritoneal mesothelioma since there is no defined system so far that can differentiate the stages of the development of cancerous tumor cells. If required, TNM staging system normally used to detect the cancer in stages. Other than that, Serum mesothelin-related protein (SMRP) may be a potentially useful serum marker used to diagnose and to follow-up the cancer progression. Computer tomography (CT) findings may be a useful tool in detection and characterization of peritoneal mass.

Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a deadly neoplasm. MPM’s diagnosis is difficult to perform since the symptoms will take a long time to show up. Early detection is the key in peritoneal mesothelioma treatment since the cancer cell normally spread very fast.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma can be regarded as a very dangerous cancer among other cancer.However we can prevent this problems from occur to you and your family. As i said before, early detection is the key of peritoneal mesothelioma treatment success since the cancer cell spread very fast. Prevention of Cancer Ayurvedic Treatment

Prevention of Cancer Ayurvedic Treatment

Article by Payal Gupta

Cancer can be prevented through Ayurvedic Treatment. The process is a little arduous and time consuming, but results can be achieved by being persistent and tenacious. Many experts and gurus have said that Ayurveda stops the spread of cancer and curbs its malefic effects. The science itself sees the disease germinating out of blood impurities and aggravated Doshas. The alternate therapy provided by Ayurveda ensures all cancer patients have hope of jettisoning the malady indefinitely from their lives.

Ayurvedic Hospitals take a different approach to treating blood cancer and all other forms of cancer. Some of the quintessential treatments include the likes of Charaka Samhita and Shushruta Samhita. Ayurvedic Hospitals work on the Prakriti of the human organism affected by cancer and cleanse it thoroughly. They try to chuck out impurities present in the blood cells of the patient.

The weakened Doshas and impure blood lead to Blood Cancer and other forms, feels Ayurveda. They reduce immunity toward diseases further leading to abnormal blood functioning. Blood is also not able to carry Prana to the cells, weakening the defense of the body overall. The Prana, supposed to be life air along with oxygen, is thought to contain a form of energy meant to help human cells perform normally. Impure blood penetrating into body parts weakens it overall leading to uncontrolled cell division known as Arbudha.

Ayurvedic Hospitals offer Prophylactic, Palliative, Supportive and Curative Solutions for treating Blood Cancer and other forms. These solutions are used in many ways. At times they get used up as co-therapies along with a major therapy. They are also used concurrently along with radio therapies. They can be made a part of post surgery support. They prevent cancer cell proliferation. They are used in annihilating tumors. Quality of Life, overall, is improved.

A plethora of Ayurvedic Herbs is used by clinics to treat Cancer. Given below are some of them.

* Curcumin: This is a substance obtained from Spiced Turmeric. It is an antioxidant which prevents inflammation. It prevents growth of cancer cells, kills existing ones and reduces overall count to an amazing extent.

* Gynostemma Pentaphyllum: A translation done in Chinese means ‘Magical Grass’. It is a tonic recommended for overall body health. It helps in enhancing immunity and preventing growth of cancer cells. * Arjuna: It is an extract from Terminalia. The presence of Flavanoids in Arjuna ensures deployment of high anti-oxidants which scavenge into cancer growth. Lung cancer is said to be halted to a huge extent. * Ashwagandha: Also known as the Indian Ginseng, it is rich in Flavanoids and considered to be highly inflammatory, anti oxidant, with anti tumor properties. It is known to kill cancerous cells and work on lung cancer.* Shatavri: It rejuvenates and strengthens a patient after a rigorous chemotherapy session.

Clinics and other similar facilities practicing Ayurveda make full use of all these herbs to ensure cancer is dealt with an iron fist. Treatment is subscribed accordingly depending on the part of the body where the cells start growing. The part affected is eventually hammered with the requisite therapy which ensures the mounting cells are stopped, their growth interjected and subdued gradually. Also, those cells are isolated and confined to that part only and not allowed to contaminate other parts.

All in all, Ayurveda also happens to be the most organic form of treatment ever to be conceived. It is one of the most trusted as well, as there are possibly no side effects at all. The work happens through herbals and other natural medicines applied eventually to the patient, leading to the disease being exposed directly to treatment and being weeded out in the due course of time.

3 Mesothelioma Treatments Explained

3 Mesothelioma Treatments Explained

Article by Tom Parker

Mesothelioma is one of the most uncommon types of cancer and is almost always caused by past exposure to asbestos. It is believed to affect around 2000 people in the UK each year. There are two different forms of mesothelioma; pleural mesothelioma (which makes the lining of the lungs become thicker) and peritoneal mesothelioma (which makes the lining of the abdomen become thicker). Being diagnosed with this type of cancer is not a pleasant experience. However, there are treatment options available. In this article I will be explaining three of the top mesothelioma treatments.

1) SURGERY:- If you have pleural mesothelioma and it is in the early stages, surgery may be a viable treatment option. However, it cannot usually be used to treat peritoneal mesothelioma. When surgery is possible it will usually involve a pleurectomy (removing part or all of the pleura and the surrounding lung tissue) but sometimes an extra-pleural pneumonectomy (removing the pleura, the diaphragm, the tumour and the whole lung) is required for more advanced cancers.

2) CHEMOTHERAPY:- This mesothelioma treatment involves using anti-cancer medications to slow the growth of the tumour. It can also help reduce any undesirable symptoms. Unfortunately, in most cases chemotherapy alone is not enough to cure mesothelioma and instead helps provide sufferers with a better quality of life. However, it can be effective after surgery for killing off any remaining cancer cells and reducing the risk of recurrence.

Chemotherapy treatment does come with some undesirable side effects. The main side effect is that the drugs used often kill some non-cancerous cells too which makes you more susceptible to infections and can make you tire more easily. There are other associated side effects which include hair loss, nausea and diarrhoea. However, these depend upon the type of chemotherapy drug being used.

3) RADIOTHERAPY:- This involves using high energy radiation beams to destroy the cancerous cells. Radiotherapy is often used to relieve any undesirable symptoms but can sometimes prove an effective treatment for mesothelioma. It can also be used to shrink the tumour before surgery and to reduce the risk of the cancer returning after surgery.

Radiotherapy treatment also has comes with some unwanted side effects. These include nausea, vomiting and tiredness. However, these side effects and their severity varies depending upon the strength of the radiation used and the length of the radiotherapy treatment.

Mesothelioma is very rare but like any other cancer it can prove fatal if ignored. No one wants to be diagnosed with a condition like this but it can be treated. This article has discussed three of the options that are available but to get the full picture you need to go see your doctor. They are the professionals and they will be able to choose the best type of treatment for you and your circumstances.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Mesothelioma is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

Cure for Lung Cancer

Cure for Lung Cancer

Article by Charlene J Nuble

It would be false to assume that there is cure for lung cancer especially if it has reached the terminal stages or the stages 3 and 4. When cancer reaches these stages, there is a very slim chance that the cancer can be cured.

However, there are several treatments which can be done in order to fight the growing lung cancer cells. Treatment for lung cancer can have a good prognosis if: the person’s health is optimal, the cancer cells have not advanced and grew in number and the preference and dedication of the patient to submit to treatment therapy.

In treating cancer, several treatment regimens are needed in order to achieve a better reaction. Some of the treatments done are chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and multi-drug therapy.

A patient can choose not to undergo one treatment modality if it concerns him or her. If the person chooses not to, the physician can suggest focusing the care on the patient’s comfort which is termed as palliative treatment rather than the actual disease itself.

Surgery

In lung cancer surgery, the surgeon will have the option to remove the cancer and parts of the tissue marginalizing it. Some of the procedures that are used to remove the cancer inside the lungs are:

1. Pneumonectomy – removal of the entire lung2. Lobectomy – removal of the entire lobe of just one lung3. Wedge resection – removal of a tiny section of a lung which contains the cancer cells together with portions of healthy tissues surrounding it.

When surgery is done, the surgeon may or may not opt to remove the adjacent lymph nodes from the inside of your chest in order to check for cancer cells as well. If the nodes are found out to contain some cancer cells, metastasis is indicative. Surgery for lung cancer has different risks like infection and internal bleeding. Pain may be experienced after the surgery, therefore medicines to mask it are to be prescribed. Soon, rehabilitation or physical therapy will be suggested by your physician in order to restore the client’s active range or motion and muscle strength.

Chemotherapy

Here, drugs are used. Chemotherapeutic drugs can be administered via intravenous injection or oral administration. The series of drug treatments can last for a period of several weeks and even months with breaks in between therapy to let the body rest. Chemotherapy is used as the first line of cure in lung cancer treatment if surgery is not opted or serves as a follow up treatment after a surgery. Furthermore, there are cases wherein chemotherapy is used in order to lessen side effects or complications of lung cancer.

Radiation Therapy

Here, high-powered beams like x-rays are used in order to eliminate cancer cells. This kind of therapy can either be internal or external. Internal radiation is the usage or insertion of, seeds needles or catheters inside the human body adjacent to the cancer cell which is also known as brachytherapy. In external therapy, the person’s chest is exposed to the high-powered beam.

While many are willing to go through a series of treatment procedures in order to achieve a cure for lung cancer, some refuses to try it. One of the main reasons why people refuse to undergo such treatment procedures is because of the notion that the side effects are more prevalent than the benefits.
