Article by Sara Sentor

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. This is a deadly cancer that begins in the mesothelium, which is a membrane that lines many body cavities. The areas that determine the three main types of mesothelioma are:• The outer lining of the lungs• The lining of the abdominal cavity• The membrane around the heartMesothelioma Prognosis And CareMesothelioma is often misdiagnosed because the symptoms resemble symptoms of common ailments. Diagnostic surgeries can help to determine the type of malignant cells that are present in the body. To determine the extent and location of the cancer, a body imaging scan, including a magnetic resonance image (MRI) or computer topography (CT scan) is needed. Proper treatment is based on the location, type of disease, the stage of the disease, and the health of the patient. The Three Cancerous Types Of Mesothelioma Due To Asbestos ExposurePeritoneal Mesothelioma: Peritoneal mesothelioma begins in the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. Pleural Mesothelioma: Pleural mesothelioma is a more common type of mesothelioma that develops in the outer lining of the lungs. Pericardial Mesothelioma: Pericardial mesothelioma is rare type of mesothelioma which is found in approximately 3-5 percent of the total mesothelioma cases. Asbestos Exposure And Mesothelioma Signs And SymptomsAsbestos exposure can cause severe health problems such as mesothelioma. What is a typical day like with lung cancer?

Question by Blue Rox: What is a typical day like with lung cancer?
I am doing a presentation on lung cancer and I wanted to add something extra besides facts. I want to know what a normal day would be like for a person that is living with lung cancer or perhaps what a day is like when you get treatment. Anyone care to share your stories?

Best answer:

Answer by Denisedds
You want “to add something extra besides facts”?!
Are you serious? Maybe you are planning a degree in journalism.
One person’s treatment is not the same as the next. I would think you would know that gathering all of your facts.
If you want to add some sort of shock factor look up how a lobectomy is done and look up what rib spreaders are. If this is not horrifying I don’t know what is. While you are at it you can look up pictures on normal healthy lungs and ones with cancer and include them in your presentation the difference is striking.

What do you think? Answer below!

Patients Needed To Reverse Lung Cancer Toll

Patients Needed To Reverse Lung Cancer Toll

Article by Diane Colaizzi

Philadelphia, PA, November 21, 2007– New medicines and medical approaches, increased knowledge and breakthrough clinical trials are helping improve the prognosis for people with lung cancer.

For example, recent studies prove that chemotherapy after lung cancer surgery increases five-year survival by 15 percent. Continued clinical studies (or “trials) can build on this positive data. Future trials will likely focus on our rapidly increasing knowledge of genetics, molecular biology and immunology to develop even more effective and less toxic treatments for cancer. The new knowledge will help doctors detect cancer at its earliest and most treatable state. Seventy percent of lung cancer patients are not diagnosed until their disease has reached a late stage.

Participation in clinical trials is crucial. Yet, according to the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups, only 14 percent of lung cancer patients are aware that a clinical trial may be a treatment option. The nonprofit coalition is working to change that. It formed a Scientific Leadership Council (SLC) to help study the causes of and treatments for lung cancer. The Coalition’s central mission is to increase awareness of and participation in cancer trials. For lung caner, the Coalition’s SLC has highlighted three trials – identified by a number or name – as high priorities that can have an immediate impact on lung cancer treatment: 1) RADIANT (OSI-774-302), a trial testing the use of a drug, Tarceva (erlotinib), following surgery for non-small cell lung cancer; 2) E1505, a trial testing the benefits of combining a drug called Avastin (bevacizumab) with chemotherapy following surgery for non-small cell lung cancer; and 3) SO533, a trial studying a new treatment regimen using Avastin in patients with advanced lung cancer.

Patients can find information on these trials at http://www.CancerTrialsHelp.org.The site answers questions about cancer research and features TrialCheck®, an online search tool that quickly gives patients access to customized clinical trial information – sorted by cancer type and the patient’s ZIP Code. TrialCheck® users can discuss search results immediately with an American Cancer Society National Cancer Information Center specialist (also using TrialCheck®) by calling (877) 227-8451.

Question by Natalie: How long can a person live with stage 4 lung cancer?
My Grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (tumors in both lungs) but they haven’t given him any set time. Does anyone have any idea?
Yes, his doctor doesn’t believe in giving a ‘life expectancy’. Non-small cell lung cancer DOES have 4 stages. I have heard that, with the small amount of chemo he’s receiving once a month, a year is about right.

Mesothelioma’s Secondary Patients Can Learn How to Cope

Mesothelioma’s Secondary Patients Can Learn How to Cope

Article by Wendy Moyer

When someone is diagnosed with mesothelioma they often feel helpless, sad, and perhaps even a bit desperate. That’s because they have been diagnosed with a life threatening disease that has no known cure.

The patient probably knows many people who have also worked with asbestos who have contracted this terrible disease. And many of them have probably perished from it. And if they know anyone who has mesothelioma they know that it can be very painful as well.

The patient is probably also familiar with the phenomenal cost of medication and hospitalization that they and their family will have to face in the future.

Although most of the attention will be focused on the patient at the time that mesothelioma is diagnosed they are not the only victims. Their families, friends, and loved ones also are faced with the inevitable chain of events that will follow the diagnosis.

They are experiencing anger at the company that has brought this on. They know that they will have to deal with watching someone close to them face a lot of pain and suffering. They are facing the fear of losing the patient to the disease. They are concerned with the upcoming medical costs. And if the patient is still working they know that it’s just a matter of time before the income from their work will have to stop.

For these reasons many healthcare professionals are now viewing the families of mesothelioma patients as secondary patients.

Mesothelioma’s Secondary Patients Have to Learn to Cope

If someone who is close to you has been diagnosed with mesothelioma then you must learn to cope with the disease and its repercussions. First of all, just by being there for the patient you are doing the best thing imaginable. Your support and compassion shows the patient how much you care and eases the burden they bear.

As a victim yourself you should realize that the emotions you are experiencing are completely normal. However you should not keep your feelings to yourself. Talk with other family members about it and find a support group that you and other members of your family can turn to.

So as not to feel helpless you should learn everything you can about the disease. Ask your doctor any questions you have.

And it is important that you exercise and eat properly. You should also do things that give you a psychological break from having to deal with the disease. Make sure to spend time enjoying recreational pursuits or hobbies.

And give serious consideration to seeking financial help. If you file a lawsuit you may be able to receive mesothelioma compensation that can be used to pay for medical care, debts, and funeral costs.

And a settlement can also ensure that your family will not be left destitute when your loved one passes away.

5 Things You Can Do to Prevent Lung Cancer.

5 Things You Can Do to Prevent Lung Cancer.

Article by James S. Pendergraft

Lung cancer is a form that is quite difficult to treat. Simply put lung cancer is the cancer affecting the lung tissues making it difficult for exchange of gases in the respiratory system. It is very elusive and hence difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are not out of the ordinary and hence can mislead the physician.

The patients suffer a lot and treatment is limited and localized. Prevention is the best form of cure as far as cancer is concerned since all forms of cancer are torturous to the mind and body of the individual. Prevention is easier where lung cancer is concerned. Avoiding risk causing substances, the chances of developing it can be reduced or its occurrence can be prolonged.

Things That Can Be Done To Prevent Lung Cancer Are:

Quit Smoking:

The first and the foremost factor is, of course, smoking. This is the main cause of lung cancer. An estimated 87% deaths occur due to lung cancer caused by smoking. Make your body tobacco free. This is the best defense possible against lung cancer. Kicking the habit might be difficult but certainly would be better than suffering from cancer of the lung. Another aspect of smoking is the effect it has on people exposed to the smoke.

Secondhand smoke or the smoke emanating from cigarettes, cigars and pipes is carcinogenic. This smoke is known to contain more than sixty carcinogens or agents that can trigger the process of cancer development. These carcinogens cause changes in cell division and development. The abnormal divisions give rise to excess number of cells which do not have regulatory processes governing them and hence causes malfunctions leading to malignancies.

Eat fruits and vegetables:

Nature itself has provided us with the chemicals required to fight cancer. Antioxidants and flavanoids are substances that aid in repairing damaged cells and helps in protecting the nuclear material or the DNA. These substances are available in abundance in fruits and vegetables. Consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables in a day will go far in keeping cancer at bay. People who are physically active and fit have lesser chances of being succumbed by cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight would be beneficial.

Avoid Exposure to radon:

Radon is a substance that is highly carcinogenic. Exposure to radon and such other radioactive gases can cause lung cancer. Radon is a byproduct of uranium degradation. This is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas which cannot be detected easily. Homes built over natural deposits of uranium can have radon in them and exposure to this is dangerous. Homes should be checked and test for the presence of this deadly carcinogen.

Avoid Exposure to pollutants in workplace:

Pollutants like gasoline, arsenic, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, mustard gas, coal products, chloro methyl ethers, diesel exhaust are carcinogens or agents causing cancer. Workplace can expose you to these agents and it should be reduced or limited in concordance with the employer.

Chemoprevention:

Many cancer specific natural drugs can some times reverse the process of cancer. These drugs can be taken to prevent cancer from occurring in patients with history of the condition. The area dealing with chemoprevention is under active clinical research.
