What is a typical day like with lung cancer?

Question by Blue Rox: What is a typical day like with lung cancer?
I am doing a presentation on lung cancer and I wanted to add something extra besides facts. I want to know what a normal day would be like for a person that is living with lung cancer or perhaps what a day is like when you get treatment. Anyone care to share your stories?

Are you serious? Maybe you are planning a degree in journalism.
One person’s treatment is not the same as the next. I would think you would know that gathering all of your facts.
If you want to add some sort of shock factor look up how a lobectomy is done and look up what rib spreaders are. If this is not horrifying I don’t know what is. While you are at it you can look up pictures on normal healthy lungs and ones with cancer and include them in your presentation the difference is striking.

The new knowledge will help doctors detect cancer at its earliest and most treatable state. Seventy percent of lung cancer patients are not diagnosed until their disease has reached a late stage.

Participation in clinical trials is crucial. Yet, according to the Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups, only 14 percent of lung cancer patients are aware that a clinical trial may be a treatment option. The nonprofit coalition is working to change that. It formed a Scientific Leadership Council (SLC) to help study the causes of and treatments for lung cancer. The Coalition’s central mission is to increase awareness of and participation in cancer trials. For lung caner, the Coalition’s SLC has highlighted three trials – identified by a number or name – as high priorities that can have an immediate impact on lung cancer treatment: 1) RADIANT (OSI-774-302), a trial testing the use of a drug, Tarceva (erlotinib), following surgery for non-small cell lung cancer; 2) E1505, a trial testing the benefits of combining a drug called Avastin (bevacizumab) with chemotherapy following surgery for non-small cell lung cancer; and 3) SO533, a trial studying a new treatment regimen using Avastin in patients with advanced lung cancer.

Q&A: How long can a person live with stage 4 lung cancer?

Question by Natalie: How long can a person live with stage 4 lung cancer?
My Grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (tumors in both lungs) but they haven’t given him any set time. Does anyone have any idea?
Yes, his doctor doesn’t believe in giving a ‘life expectancy’. Non-small cell lung cancer DOES have 4 stages. I have heard that, with the small amount of chemo he’s receiving once a month, a year is about right.

Sorry about your grandad. My bf’s grandma was diagnosed w stage 4 lung cancer too last wk and they gave her 1 year to live. I’m no expert on cancer but I’m sure it varies from person to person especially when the cancer is that far advanced, he should be able to get that info from his physician tho. I hope my answer was of some help and again sorry about your grandad.

She was first diagnosed of pneumonia but further tests and chest x-ray revealed that she has malignant mesothelioma. Jane became worried about her younger brothers and sisters whom health conditions. A nine and half hours surgery was later carried out on her to remove her left lung and from that surgery she was positively diagnosed with malignant diffuse mesothelioma. After she was diagnosed of mesothelioma and she realized how she got the disease. Another unfortunate story is that of a woman who also got asbestos exposure through the laundering of her husband clothing. She was diagnosis after her husband who was confirmed mesothelioma sufferer fifteen years was treated for the disease. The housewife unlike her husband, who survives the treatment, died a month after she was diagnosed of mesothelioma.

Prevention is the best form of cure as far as cancer is concerned since all forms of cancer are torturous to the mind and body of the individual. Prevention is easier where lung cancer is concerned. Avoiding risk causing substances, the chances of developing it can be reduced or its occurrence can be prolonged.

Things That Can Be Done To Prevent Lung Cancer Are:

Quit Smoking:

The first and the foremost factor is, of course, smoking. This is the main cause of lung cancer. An estimated 87% deaths occur due to lung cancer caused by smoking. Make your body tobacco free. This is the best defense possible against lung cancer. Kicking the habit might be difficult but certainly would be better than suffering from cancer of the lung. Another aspect of smoking is the effect it has on people exposed to the smoke.

These substances are available in abundance in fruits and vegetables. Consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables in a day will go far in keeping cancer at bay. People who are physically active and fit have lesser chances of being succumbed by cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight would be beneficial.

Avoid Exposure to radon:

Radon is a substance that is highly carcinogenic. Exposure to radon and such other radioactive gases can cause lung cancer. Radon is a byproduct of uranium degradation. This is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas which cannot be detected easily. Homes built over natural deposits of uranium can have radon in them and exposure to this is dangerous. Homes should be checked and test for the presence of this deadly carcinogen.

Avoid Exposure to pollutants in workplace:

Pollutants like gasoline, arsenic, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, mustard gas, coal products, chloro methyl ethers, diesel exhaust are carcinogens or agents causing cancer. Workplace can expose you to these agents and it should be reduced or limited in concordance with the employer.

Chemoprevention:

Many cancer specific natural drugs can some times reverse the process of cancer. These drugs can be taken to prevent cancer from occurring in patients with history of the condition. The area dealing with chemoprevention is under active clinical research.
